The first step is rental car insurance. check with your auto insurance company. Many of the big companies like Geico, Progressive, and State Farm offer this coverage, or you can add it to your policy. You may already be paying for it. Be sure to get in in writing from them.
Next, contact your credit card company, some of them offer collision damage coverage, you will still need the liability coverage. You can buy the liability from companies like BONZAH.COM, RENTALCOVER.COM and other rental car insurance companies.
Travel insurance is another option, you can include car rental insurance on these policies.
The last option is "None Owner" insurance. Companies like Bristol West offer this coverage. But it usually doesn't include the collision damage coverage. All of our rentals must have full coverage insurance that is provided by the renter. They charge high fees if you don't follow them. We do this as well.
Remember, you will be charged for any damages, both cosmetic or mechanical. To avoid these fees, DO NOT SMOKE IN THE RENTAL, keep in as clean as possible, and return it with the fuel filled to the level it had when you picked it up. To play it safe, bring it to a FULL SERVICE car wash and have them clean the inside. This may cost you about $25 to $30. But save you much more in fees. Lastly, take pictures of any damages to the rental before you leave the office. This is for your protection. The rental company usually does this to protect themselves.
